Welcome to Sarajevo
        Before the Marine Ball
Patti left DC for Sarajevo on September 2nd of 2003, but not before moving all our storage from one warehouse to another, purchasing supplies for two years abroad, and packing, packing, packing for the long hard winter ahead.  I followed in October.  Our first apartment in Sarajevo was an apartment near the river and overlooking the city and mountains beyond.  We moved to a bigger place in 3/05, just across the bridge from 'old town' and in a cluster of very nice restaurants.  Except for its cold winters, Sarajevo is a surprisingly nice place to live!  .

Sarajevo is recovering from three years of war, 1993 thru 1996.  The reports say 200,000 people died - more than any war since WWII.  Where buildings once stood, now there are new graveyards, acres of them.  A view of the hills in the distance contains what looks like a snowcap, but it's actually a graveyard of white headstones.  But S'jevo is back!  The Concert Hall & Museum are active and busy.  We now have three warehouse-type grocery stores in town.  Restaurants are opening everywhere, and the dining is good!  People stroll the old cobblestone streets on evenings and weekends and sip coffee at sidewalk cafes.  It's old fashioned, like the 1940s in America.  There are some nice pictures of the town and the surrounding area in the links below.
